Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

The Companions Gather
An information gathering party sent by a tribe of orcs, half-orcs, and outcasts (led by the human madman Kurtz), is sent south to the coastal city of Melvaunt. Hud (the only human son of Kurtz), sends his (half-orc) half-brothers back to report, and remains in the city to learn more of city and human life. Used to being a part of a more organized group, he soon starts freelancing for FU (a new mercenary guild) to earn a place and survive in the city. Meanwhile, Grimmort Bonespear, the lone (?) survivor of an orckish tribe wiped-out by its rival, washes up on the shores of the Stojanow River outside Phlan. Taken in by Phlan’s more beneficent chapter of FU, he is restored to health. As tensions in Phlan reach new levels, he is smuggled out of the town on a ship to Melvaunt for his own safety. With virtually no possessions, save his shield and spears, he arrives at the FU chapter-house there, a letter of recommendation in hand. The enigmatic leader of Melvaunt FU pairs Hud and Grimmort on a contract to discover what has been corrupting the waters of several wells. They find clues that lead them to an underground complex teeming with skeletons and zombies. In the course of their exploration, they are surprised when, Slyte, an arctic dwarf girl, stumbles into their path, still wearing wearing shackles from her imprisonment. The adventurers return to the chapter-house to recover from their wounds and to listen to Slyte’s tale of captivity and the magical experiments being performed on others under the streets of Melvaunt. Outfitting Slyte as best they can, and enlisting her with FU, the three return to finish the expedition. They are ambushed by a berserker and a mage outside of the rooms were Slyte was recently held. During a bloody combat, in which the berserker is finally slain, the mage escapes further into the tunnels, calling out for aid from his ‘master’. Over the next several days, they fought a pack of dire rats, strange lizard-like men and interrupted a necromancer in his rituals, killing him before he could raise the dead to fight for him. His apprentice (?), the mage from earlier unleashed damaging magics upon them and fled.

The Characters Get Jobs

Making your way in Melvaunt is not always easy, and usually means finding some way of making money. Our adventurers set out on different paths to earn their keep with the FU Guild. Hud took a contract guarding House Natali, a well-known family in Melvaunt. Rumors of a sick heir, a nudist lady, and possible attacks from rival Houses abounded. Hud confirmed that, yes indeed, Lady Natali was an exhibitionist, and that the Natalis were definitely being watched. After noticing a suspicious character lurking about, he gave chase, but the suspect got away. There was an attempt to infiltrate the guards, which was also foiled. During this time Hud was under the command of Weston, captain of the House Natali guard. Hud also conspired with his fellow adventurers to identify and find a use for an unknown metal they found under Melvaunt. This led him to meet a halfling smith, Fubdina, working at Peyton’s Pain Protection, an armorsmithy near the FU Guildhouse.

Meanwhile, Slyte was up to some new tricks. Adjusting to city-life was easier when her skills were called upon for an espionage mission. An infamous pirate captain was rumored to be in Melvaunt, gathering crew and supplies. Following a trail of whispers and hiding in the shadows, she tracked the pirate down to the shady, ill-reputed ___________. There to here surprise, she found the pirate in a meeting with Captain Cousteau (a regular at the Drunken Half-Giant, the adventurers tavern of choice). After Cousteau left, his consort Jasra, also met with the pirate, and a deadly love triangle was revealed. Slyte also witnessed a meeting with some of the new crew and managed to obtain a scroll case, but had no time to examine the contents before she had to withdraw. She spent a number of days familiarizing herself with the city, and took a sample of the alien metal to the Temple of Gond to be tested.

Grimmort toured some of the graveyards and crypts in and around Melvaunt, at one point receiving a vision from Yurtrus, the orc god of the dead. He decided also to take a contract to infiltrate the fighting pits, and helped sabotage a fighter at the games in the Great Arena. With a little help from his friends, dark magic, and a slave at the arena, he managed to brew a foul concoction and slip it unnoticed to the fighter right before the match. The results were both hilarious and disgusting… needless to say the fix was in. Grimmort also helped retrieve the mysterious metal from the caves under Melvaunt, and by happenstance started a rumor that the grounds near the entrance were haunted. An idea was also born to later purchase the property above the entrance and possibly convert the cave into a covert base and lab for Grimmort’s unnatural experiments.
